Siemens China Environmental Portfolio to generate order intake of 4 billion Euro in 2010

  2008年08月06日

More than 40 percent of total orders from this attractive market in China until 2010 Siemens China CEO Hausmann: "1.1 billion Euro of business from the Olympics - no other company contributes for Green Games in such large extent"

Beijing, August 06, 2008 -- Siemens China, with its offering of a wide array of environmental technologies and solutions to the Beijing Games, has helped the "Green Dream" of China come true. "The showcase of 'Green Games' might well be a visible turning point for China's economy to become more sustainable", said Dr. Richard Hausmann, President and CEO of Siemens China. In consideration of China's ambitious goal of green GDP, Siemens China will generate 4 billion Euro in order intake from its environmental portfolio in 2010. More than half of the 1 billion Euro mid-term investment in China until 2010 will go into energy-saving and environmentally friendly technologies and solutions. "As a provider of green technologies behind the mega events like Beijing 2008, we are proud to be a major enabler of these Games", said Dr. Hausmann.

The comprehensive Environmental Portfolio of Siemens China fits well into the demand of the country, which is now in a challenging position to mitigate climate change and tackle energy and environmental problems. China currently ranks No.2 in terms of CO2 emission and energy consumption in the world and will probably overtake the US in 2009 as the largest CO2 producer. Energy supply has become a bottleneck for China's sustainable economic and social development. In order to tackle the problem, in 2006, the Chinese government set the ambitious target to reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP by 4 percent each year till 2010. In its bidding for the Olympics seven years ago, China also pledged to hold a “Green Olympics”, with implications of a green environment, "green stadiums" with energy saving features, and the "green consciousness" for the public that endorses environmental protection and a healthy lifestyle.

To tackle the conflicts between provision of cost-effective energies and prevention of environmental deterioration, increased use of innovative solutions is the key for the sustainability issues in China. "Siemens is best to be the partner for China to save energy and reduce emissions," said Dr. Hausmann, "Our comprehensive Environmental Portfolio includes solutions for nearly every environmentally relevant field of power generation, transmission and consumption – buildings, lighting, transportation and industry – as well as environmental technologies such as water purification and air pollution controls. Not surprisingly for Beijing 2008, our innovative technologies and solutions can be found almost everywhere in the city." The number of our projects affiliated with the Beijing games totals of over 100.

Siemens Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technologies helped the city to cope with water shortages. Beijing has long been suffering from water shortage, with an average share of water resources per person of merely 300 m3, 1/8 that of the national standard and 1/32 that of the world. To address the tough questions, Siemens China provided a cutting-edge technology – Membrane Bioreactor System – to Beixiaohe Waste Water Treatment Plant, which locates in the north of Beijing to supply the Olympic Park with recreational water and reuse water, with a total contract value of about USD 18.5 million. Compared with the conventional waste water treatment technology, the innovative membrane bioreactor has less treatment stages and high removal efficiency. In addition, it needs 60%-70% less land to install the technology, which can increase capacity of existing plants.

Siemens integrated building technologies helped the sports stadiums to be "smart". For Siemens, "intelligent" and "green" are an integrated concept, spanning the whole life of the building from planning, designing, construction, usage and maintenance. With a total contract value of about RMB 50 million, Siemens well displayed this concept in the National Aquatics Center, the so-called "Water Cube". Siemens' Integrated Stadium Solution centralizes and integrates the monitoring, control and management of all electrical installations (including MV, LV and ELV systems) throughout the stadium, minimizing energy consumption and workload while improving reliability, comfort, convenience and flexibility and therefore cutting the operation cost.

Siemens transportation technologies made flow of people during the Games easy and eco-friendly. Siemens Transportation Systems works with its Chinese partner company, Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works to build high-speed trains for China. With an operation speed of 300 km/h and a design speed of 350km/h, the trains have a total length of 200 meters and have seats for a total of up to 601 passengers. The high-speed trains have been first put into operation on the Beijing-Tianjin Passenger Line and later will be deployed on other high-speed routes. The CRH 3 is based on the "Velaro", Siemens' concept for high-speed trains which has generated a lot of interests among a number of railways around the world. Trains based on Velaro realize lower energy consumption and make less noise. In addition, the natural materials instead of plastic materials are utilized in the interior decoration, which makes the interior more environmentally friendly. Moreover, the signaling and control systems provide by Siemens for Beijing's subway network (Line 10 and Olympic branch) will shorten the waiting lines of passengers and allow trains to operate safely at much closer intervals.

Siemens baggage handling systems ensure fast and efficient flow of goods. Siemens equips the new Terminal 3 of Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) with one of the world's most advanced and biggest baggage handling systems. With its capacity to sort and transport up to 19,200 baggage items per hour, it ensures BCIA to increase the airport's annual passenger handling capacity from currently 28 million to 60 million. Intelligent logistical systems are always distinguished by improved energy consumption: Siemens' modern conveyor and sorting systems for luggage operate only when luggage must be moved, which makes considerable savings. In addition, the use of modern high-efficiency drive technologies also helps the baggage handling system save a considerable amount of energy. The order by Siemens is worth about 170 million euros.

Siemens technologies make mass utilization of renewable energy possible in China. Wind energy is playing an ever-greater role in power generation worldwide. As China is seeking renewable energies as alternative to fossil fuel, in February 2006, Winergy Drive Systems (Tianjin) Co. Ltd., (WDST) a subsidiary of Winergy, the world’s only provider of complete drive systems for wind energy, was launched by Siemens in the Wind Capital of China -Tianjin. With its state-of-the-art production facilities, WDST is anticipated to expand in the near future to meet the rapidly growing demand by the rising Chinese wind turbine market.

"As a supplier to this great sports event, we've shown the capacity to deliver quality in products and solutions and even more so to build a sustainable and resource efficient environment for millions in China", said Dr. Hausmann.

Siemens in China
Siemens is one of the most well-known, liked and respected corporate citizens in China. This is not surprising, given the fact that Siemens' first co-operation with China dates back to 1872, when the company delivered China's first pointer telegraph. Presently, all business segments of Siemens worldwide are active in China including Automation and Control, Power, Transportation, Medical, Information and Communications, Lighting as well as Household Appliances. Core focus areas of Siemens are Energy & Environmental Care, Industrial and Public Infrastructures as well as Healthcare. To date, Siemens maintains more than 90 operating companies and 60 regional offices in China. These offices are the backbone of Siemens' regional strategy and ensure that the company is close to its customers to be able to respond quickly and efficiently to their needs. With 40,000 highly qualified local staff, Siemens is one of the largest employers amongst foreign invested enterprises in China. The company has become a fully integrated part of the Chinese economy and is committed to continue its investment to develop and extend local manufacturing, engineering, R&D, software development, as well as procurement to ensure the sustainable and profitable growth of its business in China.
